Dickens' 200th Birthday

In 2012 we are celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens ( Portsmouth, February 7th, 1812) , one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Most of us have read books such as " Oliver Twist", "David Copperfield" etc in our childhood.
A lot of his novels have been adapted for the theatre and made into films or series, How many times have you seen " A Christmas Carol" ? and many of them, including Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby were originally published in a serial format, with a new part of the book being published each month. Dickens often wrote the episodes without knowing what would happen next.
Most of his characters and stories were based on people and events in his own life which was really interesting.
His works reflected real life in Victorian times, different social classes, hard times, romance, adventure, mystery etc, everyting you can think about.
So I encourage you to get into his world and read some of his novels or even know more about him clicking in the following links:

WELCOME and FAREWELL

Here we are again. We´ve just started a new year and I would like to welcome the 32 new students of 1ºESO, they will be studying Visual Art too!
For those in 2nd and 3rd(with Drawing in English too)I wish the best, you did great work in previous years and I´m sure this is going to be even better.
I would also like to welcome a new teacher to the project: Saúl Pérez. He will be in charge of the new subjects: Visual Art and Drawing. You´ll have a great time for sure.

This year we have bad news too. Antonio Torres, our excellent PE teacher has left the project and our school. He´s beeen great help, a terrific teacher and affectionate partner for all of us. We all wish you the best luck in your projects in Australia, but we´ll miss you a lot.

Dr Samuel Johnson (Lichfield 18 September 1709 – London 13 December 1784)
Last Friday we remembered Samuel Johnson´s 300th birthday, he was an English author, a journalist, poet, essayist, moralist, novelist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. The "father" of English Dictionaries.
Johnson started his career working as a teacher and moved to London where he began to write for magazines. He wrote essays, biographies, poems, plays and after nine years of work, Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755; it had a far-reaching impact on Modern English. The Dictionary brought Johnson popularity and success. Until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary, 150 years later, Johnson’s was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary.
After a series of illnesses he died on the evening of 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Education System in the U.S.A.

Provided that many of the websites we are visiting offer materials according to the levels established by the North-American educational system, I think that it would be a good idea to know something about it. Thus, I have found a brief description of it in an interesting article by the BBC. Click here to read it (it is in Spanish).

As our main interest is developing materials for 1st year E.S.O., we should pay special attention to any activities or materials deisgned for grades 8 and 9.

Hello everybody!

I have found two interesting sites which could be very useful for our bilingual project.

One of them is www.factmonster.com, where you can find lots of funny and attractive information and articles about many different issues, such as sport, science, math and money, etc. The problem is that the access is restricted and we can't get into it from the computers of the centre.

The other one is www.kids.gov, an official kids’ portal to the U.S. government wich links to over 1,200 web pages from educational organizations, schools, and government agencies geared to the learning levels and interests of girls and boys in grades K-5 and 6-8. I think that its sitemap is specially useful, so click here to be directly redirected to it.
